Zozan Shrine

Dedicated to Zozan Sakuma (1811-1864) – an important figure in Japanese history who played an influential role in advocating for Japan to open-up to the world after a long period of isolation – Zozan Shrine has a strong association with wisdom and education. Known for his rare intelligence and education in numerous studies, Zozan was assassinated by an isolationist and pro-imperial samurai in Kyoto in 1864.

Many Japanese students visit the shrine to ask for perseverance with their studies, and ultimately, success in entering and graduating their chosen schools and universities.

	Approximately a 50 to 70-minute drive from the Jigokudani Monkey Park
	From Nagano Station, take the Alpico Bus bound for Matsushiro from Bus Stop No.3 - outside the station's Zenkoji Exit - and disembark at the Matsushiro Station Bus Stop - it takes between 30 to 35 minutes. Once in Matsushiro, the shrine can be reached on foot in around 10 to 15 minutes from the bus stop. It will be easiest to first go by the Tourist Information Center to collect a map or rent a bicycle
