The Historical Village of Hokkaido (Kaitaku no Mura)

The Historical Village of Hokkaido (in Japanese: Kaitaku no Mura) is an open-air village located in Sapporo. It showcasing historical buildings and structures from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It highlights the lifestyle and culture of Hokkaido’s pioneering days during the Meiji and Taisho eras. The village is divided into four zones:  town area, fishing village, farm village and mountain village. The village contains over 60 restored buildings, many relocated from other parts of Hokkaido.

Town Area Zone: Replicates a typical Hokkaido town with shops, a post office, a sake brewery, and a newspaper company during the Meiji and Taisho eras. 

Fishing Village Zone: Displays buildings and tools related to Hokkaido’s rich fishing industry.

Farming Village Area: Includes traditional farmhouses, barns, and silos, showcasing the agricultural history of the region.

Mountain Village Area: Features structures like lumber camps and mountain huts that highlight forestry and rural life.

The buildings in this open-air  museum are preserved with great attention to detail, allowing visitors to step into the past. Interiors are often furnished with period-appropriate items. In summer, visitors can enjoy horse-drawn trolley rides.In winter, sleigh rides are available, making it a magical experience in the snow.Traditional crafts and seasonal events are held regularly, offering hands-on participation. While it’s open year-round, summer and winter provide the most distinct and beautiful experiences. Duration: Allocate at least 2–3 hours to explore fully. The Historical Village of Hokkaido is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and anyone interested in experiencing the pioneering spirit of Japan’s northernmost island.

THE HOKKAIDO MUSEUM is located in the scenic Nopporo Forest Park adjacent to The Historical Village of Hokkaido(open-air village). This museum showcases the natural history, indigenous culture, and modern development of Hokkaido. The titled main theme of the museum is: “Hokkaido’s Past, Present, and Future.” It explores the region’s ecology, history, and the interactions between its people and the environment. The museum is divided into four sections.

Natural History: Displays on Hokkaido’s unique flora, fauna, and geology. In addition, fossils including those of prehistoric animals like the Naumann elephant and ammonites.

Ainu Culture: Showcases the history and traditions of the Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaido. Exhibits include tools, clothing, and ceremonial items, emphasizing their connection to nature.

Modern History: Covers Hokkaido’s development during the Meiji Era when it was colonized to support Japan’s modernization efforts. Exhibits include agricultural tools, settler artifacts, and industrial equipment.

Special Exhibits: Rotating exhibitions feature topics like contemporary environmental issues, modern art, or detailed studies on Hokkaido’s wildlife.
