Situated in Kanagawa prefecture, just 100 minutes out of Tokyo, is Kamakura. To reach Kamakura from Tokyo, take a train from Shinjuku station to Fujisawa station, and then catch the local ’Enoden’ train to Kamakura station. However to reach Jomyoji Temple, visitors can either walk 30 minutes from Kamakura station or take a local bus for 10 minutes.

Jomyoji Temple is a beautiful and historic Zen Buddhist Temple with serene gardens, traditional architecture and a teahouse. If you are looking for a peaceful and slightly quieter experience from Kamakura’s city centre, then this is the perfect place for you. It was founded in 1188 and is one of five Great Zen Temples associated with the Ashikaga Samurai family who were highly influential during the Medieval period in Japan. During your visit you can walk around the beautifully maintained and traditional Japanese rock garden. The scene of the raked gravel, carefully placed rocks and trees make this a place to reflect and enjoy peace. There is also a tea house where you can enjoy a traditional tea ceremony, matcha and sweets as you gaze out at the temple garden and grounds.

Jomyoji Temple is also a fantastic example of the traditional architecture that was popular during the Kamakura and medieval period. Elegant wooden buildings are perfectly matched with the surrounding nature, making this a great experience for anybody wanting to feel like they’ve stepped back in time to experience Zen Buddhist heritage.
